Fall Run 2026 · Beginner's Surf-Fishing Guide

New to Striper Fishing? Want to Capture the Excitement of the Fall Run in 2026? Use Our Attack Pack!

Every fall, striped bass migrate south along the Atlantic Coast, creating some of the most exciting surf-fishing opportunities of the year. From Massachusetts to the beaches of New Jersey, anglers eagerly await migrating stripers chasing schools of baitfish along the shoreline.

If you're new to striper fishing, you might think you need a tackle bag filled with dozens of expensive lures. You don't.

At Striper Tracker, we've narrowed it down to three proven lure styles that cover some of the most important fishing situations you'll encounter during the fall run. We call it The Attack Pack.

Three Lures. One Mission. The Fall Run.

The Three-Lure Attack Pack

1. Daiwa SP Minnow — Bone

The SP Minnow is one of the trusted swimming plugs in Northeast surf fishing. Its swimming action imitates a fleeing baitfish, making it an excellent choice for searching the surf when stripers are feeding beneath the surface.

How to work it: Retrieve the SP Minnow at a slow to moderate, steady speed, allowing it to swim naturally just below the surface. Occasionally pause for one or two seconds to imitate a wounded or disoriented baitfish. In colder water, slow your retrieve and use longer pauses. Avoid reeling too fast—the lure should wobble naturally without rolling or breaking the surface.

2. White 1-Ounce Bucktail — White Fat Cow Jig Strip

Ask experienced surf fishermen about their most dependable lure, and the bucktail will frequently be near the top of the list. A simple white bucktail with a white trailer can imitate sand eels and other small baitfish moving near the bottom.

How to work it: Retrieve the bucktail slowly, keeping it swimming just above the bottom without dragging through the sand. Use occasional gentle lifts of the rod tip to make the white trailer flutter naturally. Maintain enough speed to keep the lure moving, but slow down when water temperatures drop. The goal is to imitate a small baitfish or sand eel moving close to the ocean floor.

3. Tsunami Talking Popper — 5-Inch Electro School Bus

Few experiences in surf fishing compare to watching a striped bass explode on a surface lure. The Tsunami Talking Popper creates splashes and erratic movement designed to attract aggressive fish. It's an especially exciting choice when stripers are actively chasing bait near the surface.

How to work it: Retrieve the Talking Popper at a moderate pace while giving the rod tip short, sharp downward twitches to create splashes and side-to-side movement. Alternate two or three pops with a brief one- or two-second pause, allowing the lure to settle before moving again. When bass are aggressively feeding on the surface, increase the retrieve speed and shorten the pauses. If fish follow without striking, slow down and add longer pauses to encourage a hit.

Why Only Three Striped Bass Lures?

Because successful surf fishing isn't about how many lures you own. It's about understanding when and how to use them.

The SP Minnow searches the water column. The bucktail works near the bottom. The Talking Popper targets fish feeding at the surface.

Together, these three lures give beginning anglers a straightforward way to approach changing surf conditions without the confusion of choosing from dozens of different plugs.
